Birth Anniversary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh
2017-09-28 Thu
The Indian freedom struggle was a long affair. Many great revolutionaries laid down their lives to see our country freed of over two centuries of British rule. One of such sons of India was Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, an iconic martyr who gave a new direction to the entire revolutionary movement of India. Born on 28 September 1907 at Banga village of Lyallpur district (now in Pakistan) to a Sikh family, Bhagat Singh was a role model for a generation of India.
Bhagat Singh's revolutionary career may be said to have begun when he was still in his teens. While in the college, he came under the influence of Bhai Paramnanda and Jaychandra Vidyalankar and made an exhaustive study of history, economics and politics. In 1928 along with a few daring comrades he formed Hindustan Socialist Republican Army, which would later devote itself to revolutionary acts against the British.
On April 8, 1929, Bhagat Singh threw bombs in the Central Assembly Hall while the assembly was in session and was sentenced to death on March 23, 1931, in Lahore.
Though dead, Bhagat Singh is still living in the history of humanity and remembered as a prominent face of the freedom struggle.
The Reserve Bank had issued Rs.5 denomination coins to commemorate Bhagat Singh's birth anniversary. The obverse of this coin is divided into three portions with two horizontal lines the left centre shows Lion capital of Ashoka with legend “Satyameva Jayate” in Devanagari inscribed it below and denomination “5” on right.
